| Although violent crime, especially burglary related, is very rare, petty break-ins are more common and can happen anywhere. There are, however, a number of actions you can take to help make your home less attractive to the burglar.
- Fit an Alarm
In general, burglars are looking for easy pickings. If a thief thinks he may set off an property alarm system, he will generally look elsewhere!
- Make it Visible
There should be evidence of your property alarm system on the outside of your house (all PowerMax security systems have an alarm box for external fitting), but other security devices such as window locks will also help deter a thief.
- Lock Up and Don't Leave a Key
Remember that there can be valuable items in outbuildings and garages. Thieves are often looking for garden equipment such as lawnmowers. Make sure your shed has a good lock and that it, and your garage, are kept locked up. Always lock away your ladders and never leave keys under a doormat or in a 'secret' hiding place.
- Build it High
High fences, walls and gates will put off burglars from entering your property. The back of your house is often most attractive, as the burglar has less chance of being seen. You can deter him by erecting a high and secure gate.
- Make it Safe
Don't leave valuable items lying around the house, especially in view of the windows. If you have a lot of jewellery or valuables, you may want to consider investing in a safe in which to keep them.
- Be On Your Guard
A spyhole in your front door and a robust security chain will help you when answering the door to strangers. Remember to always ask for identity cards and if in doubt, telephone the organisation that the caller purports to represent. Close the door and ask the caller to wait whilst you do this. People who are blind or partially sighted can make prior arrangements with meter readers and other callers by arranging to use a password when they visit. Your utility service will be able to give you more details. Door to door selling or investment schemes should be treated with great caution unless you are already familiar with their products or services. |
